Despite their reputation as bastions of authority, some museums are trying to open up their databases and encouraging re-use and new forms of publication through mashups or asking the public to help make their data more usable through crowdsourced improvements. The task can be difficult, and the rewards uncertain, but I'd like to share some of the lessons I learnt through running the first ever museum mashup competition, Cosmic Collections, and explore the idea that museums have natural allies in the tech communities.
