Historically most embedded systems were purpose-built, closed, stand-alone devices. The evolution of computing and communications technology means that an increasing number of these devices are becoming connected. One of the M2M markets where this is having the greatest impact is automotive. Connectivity totally changes the game for automotive infotainment systems, whether its connectivity to the cloud or to the device in your pocket. Head units and passenger systems have the opportunity to become open platforms that leverage content, media, and applications from a plethora of sources. But this connectivity doesn’t come without a few challenges – whether it’s the disparate nature of car and mobile phone life cycles, the impact on driver distraction, or the complexity for carriers as they work to develop new business models that leverage the opportunity without leaving money on the table.
