Space agencies and academics are engaged in a three-pronged effort to find extraterrestrial life, and while no one can be certain, there's chance of success within one or two decades. If so—if we find that life, even intelligent life is present on other worlds—would our excitement be unalloyed, or would there be any reason to tread carefully?
