  • Harnessing the Abundance

    Because of today's technological landscape, it has never been easier to make anything we can conceive. We live in a world where we have the Internet, inexpensive and accessible computing, search, open source, a myriad of creative tools, and a culture of sharing. But it can be tough to figure out where to start, how to connect the pieces, and how to stay focused.

    In this presentation, Mike Creighton shares his tips and methodologies for making the most of the near-unlimited resources we have in front of us. He illustrates his struggle with this abundance through an ongoing project called "Flow" -- a project that combines traditional art-making, computer vision, and generative art in an attempt to find a bridge between the analogue and the digital. We'll see how we can take the germ of a technically challenging idea to fruition by combining and re-imagining a number of open source projects and tools. Mike will also share the open source tools and libraries that he made during the process creating "Flow".

    This presentation is as much about refining your creative process as it is about harnessing the technological opportunities of today. Now is the time to stand on the shoulders of giants, start with what you already know, and remember that anything is possible.

  • Video Tapestry

    Video Tapestry is a novel approach to navigation video. It was created by Adobe Creative Technologies. It uses the same content-awareness algorithm as in Photoshop to detect faces and points of interest. It compresses and blends video frames in seamless tapestries at several zoom levels.

    This presentation takes you through the process of using the result of this C++ research project and exploring its possibilities as a commercial navigation and exploration product, with multi-touch interaction.

    The end product will be demonstrated on the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

    The effort was done as part of MTVNetworks Research and Development. Video Tapestry was showcased at Adobe Max 2010 as part of the sneaks peek and featured in the Winter edition of UK Computer Arts magazine.

  • Back to the Future: Part II

    Time to rock! Staying enthusiastic about your art and design is not entirely about finding new clients, nor is it about the changing industry. We need inspiration, entertainment, progression, a solid bridge between conceptual and technical, and a positive outlook on our place in the design universe. What matters when searching for your creative voice? This presentation will deal with all of these points wrapped into personal stories, art examples, client case studies, the importance of self-investment and a solid dose of nostalgic inspiration mixed with rock n' roll.

    James will discuss the ins and outs of selling your personal artwork online and the adventure of building his line of designer t-shirts and posters. He will also present the lessons learned from running his Signalnoise Design Studio for the past 5 years and how he went about creating his name in the design industry, which started 30 years ago at the age of 4.

    This presentation will be a full and robust extension on last year's session, which was lovingly titled Back to the Future. This might be titled Part II, but don't worry you haven't missed a thing because when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious shit.

  • The Multiplicity And Confusion Of Things

    Mathematics is the grain of sand upon which formed the pearl that is the modern world. Yet math remains, for many of us, a scary thing. Something we don't know enough of and that's written in a language that eludes casual study. Put bluntly, math is hard, let's go shopping.

    But what if mindless consumer indulgence doesn't drive you? What if you're one of the growing group of geeks and artists that call themselves "makers"? You see other people like you creating beautiful, incredible things and you get this gut wrenching feeling you should have paid more attention in Algebra II.

    The truth is, more often than not, the math at the heart of beautiful things is quite simple. It's math you probably learned in high school, just iterated and artfully applied. It's that math that this talk is all about. The stuff you probably already know (or at least, once knew). It's about how you can take simple math concepts and use them create wonderful things - both digital and real.

  • Who Needs Flash When You Have the Flash Player?

    Interactivity and Rich Media are terms being tossed around like dust in a sand storm. Both InDesign CS5 and Catalyst CS5 allow you to prototype of create some rather amazing "Flash" projects that don't use Flash ... sort of. In this presentation I will:

    - Create a five- page interactive magazine in InDesign that incorporates page turns, a slide show, animated cutlines audio, video and interactivity without ever touching Flash.

    - Review the pros and cons and "why" of the use of InDesign and make it really clear that even though you can output to Flash, if you don't know Flash you are screwed.

    - Use many of the tools - Fireworks, Illustrtator, Soundbooth ,Premiere, Adobe Media Encoder and not Flash- in the Master Collection used to create an In Flight Entertainment project that incorporates audio, video, interactivity and motion.

    - Review why Catalyst is not exactly "Flash for the Noob",where the codie fits into this entire process and exactly where Catalyst fits into the RIA workflow..

    Television studios are chock-a-block full of professional equipment including a time code generator, intercom system, professional video and audio capture devices, and mixing boards. What if you don't have all that stuff? We'll show some work on creating a virtual and multicast enabled studio using a real-time component framework and Flash Media Enterprise Server. The project is a collaboration between Ryerson University in Canada and the Media University (Hochschule der Medien) in Germany.

  • HOW DO YOU TURN THIS THING ON?

    Having just celebrated our tenth birthday, we've earned ourselves some bragging rights: we've been around the block a few times and are a few stories better for it. We've watched trends come and go and can even take credit for some of them. We've been to exotic places on classy shoots with expensive dinners, and we've elbowed with celebrityfolk at festivals and parties. How do we do it?

    If we knew, we'd almost certainly sell out and market ourselves as a haute boutique in London | Rio | Tokyo | Kansas City. Instead, we've stumbled through the past decade and continue to stumble on, grabbing at random ideas and trampling through gardens as we go. Our business model is loose, our studio a wonderful democratic mess. And we're in the middle of nowhere, geographically, which is as bad for business as it is good for creative isolation.

    Somewhere in all of that, though, there's an alchemy at work, and it soaks into everything we make. It's a chemistry that we ourselves can't always explain, but we're always happy to try, and so here we are.

    In this talk, MK12 will put their often-schizophrenic thought process on full display, highlighting our collective influences, our niches and tangents, successes and failures, philosophies on design and art-making, and a few projects we'd rather not show a discriminating audience. As a case study, we will also screen our latest film, TELEPHONEME, and discuss our creation of this year's FITC opening trailer.

  • Design IO: Interactive Installations and Experimental Storytelling

    For many people interactive is synonymous with web, but for designers Emily Gobeille and Theodore Watson of Design IO interactive has a completely different meaning. To them interactive means engaging with the world around you, pushing the possibilities of design and technology and creating magical experiences that invite people to jump in and play. Using openFrameworks (an open source toolkit for creative coding) Emily and Theodore transform code and design into experimental, playful interactive experiences that exist beyond the screen and create new narratives for public space.

    For this talk, Design IO will showcase some of their recent projects, like the interactive ecosystem "Funky Forest" and "Rise & Fall" an interactive cover experience for Boards Magazine. They will also take you behind the scenes to see how their projects are made and how their work both draws from and feeds back into the openFrameworks community.

"Small, cheap, simple" means you can focus more on your spaces and users and making meaningful conversations, as well as iterate quickly and have fun. In this session Joshua Noble talks about interaction and spaces using 5 small, cheap, and simple technologies and techniques: RFID, RF Radio Waves, IR Beams, XBee, QR Codes and presents examples using Arduino, mobile phones, Flash, Processing, and openFrameworks applications to create local distributed systems.

    There have been a number of interesting projects tying together flash with the Microsoft Kinect sensor. In this session, you’ll learn how to pair up these two technologies using a simple server-side javascript based socket server. We’ll walk through the steps of setting everything up and then show you how to tie it in to multiple UI technologies including Flash, Unity and HTML.
