Concurrent 4A: Free Open Software: An Untapped Resource for the Small Publisher

A session at Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) 2011

The rapid technological advances of recent years means that publishers have had to undergo many changes. In all the areas of creation of content, management of content and in delivery of that content, publishers have had to adapt. And much of that adaption has cost and is costing money. While larger publishers have been able to invest in expensive proprietary software systems, the pressure has been greater on small publishers. In this session we look at how free software could come to the rescue of those publishers. A good example is WordPress, which is normally used as a blogging platform. Recently many publishers have found that it is very well suited for content creation and management. A good example is Schlager Group, who will be represented by Neil Schlager.
