Several years ago, executives at Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), one of the biggest health care systems in the U.S., took a hard look at the organization’s highly decentralized business model and realized that it had to “unite.” Through years of growth by acquisition and consolidation, CHIS’s 48 hospital systems and 78 locations had always done things their own way.
