140 Conference: Microfunding Hope for $1/Frame

A session at SXSW Interactive 2011

Saturday 12th March, 2011

4:15pm to 4:30pm (CST)

Thanks to Kickstarter, projects that would never have seen the green light of day are getting funded. Everything from tiny indy films to original pieces of art to giant statues of Robocop are being underwritten because of this revolutionary funding portal. But (you knew there was going to be a "but") there are many reasons you might consider creating your own microfunding portal instead of going through Kickstarter. The first is obvious....if you don't raise 100% of your goal, you get nothing. (It's like "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." Aim too high, and you might not get there. Set the bar low, and you'll always wonder how much more you could have raised.) The second -- and bigger -- reason is that unless you meet your Kickstarter fundraising goal, you lose out on the opportunity to build a community and meaningful dialogue with your contributors. Join this discussion and hear about how I'm funding my next film, "Lemonade: Detroit" frame by frame, and find out why and how to become an independent microfinancer yourself.
