Sketching to understand a client's domain

A session at UX Camp Brighton 2011

One of the most effective ways to demonstrate a correct understanding of a client's organisation / business / domain is to draw it out in front of them in live response to their description. This is often an enlightening moment on both sides, as clients rarely have such an intuitive overview of the nuts and bolts of how they operate. It certainly beats a tome of written documentation.

I don't intend to talk for long, because I'm not trying to promote a particular approach or methodology. Instead, I'll offer some tips and prepare a few practice exercises for participants to work through - something that mixes together a number of different users / actors and how they interact with their domain and each other.

This session will suit those with a modicum of drawing ability, and who bring their own sketchbook and pens.
