In the past year and a half, Instagram (a popular photo-sharing social network for iOS and Android) has scaled to over 30 million users worldwide, with a small team of only 2.5 backend engineers. This talk will describe how we did it, and what lessons we've learned in building simple, efficient systems that scale. Along the way, you'll hear about how we make decisions on new vs proven technologies, how Redis and PostgreSQL play together in our system, and get to take a behind-the-scenes look at how we prepared for our Android launch, which had over a million downloads in its first day.
