MySQL and MariaDB story

A session at All Your Base Conference

Friday 23rd November, 2012

9:40am to 10:25am (GMT)

How was MySQL created? Why was it successful? And how did it grow until it was sold to Sun, later acquired by Oracle?

The talk will cover how and why MariaDB, a branch of MySQL, was born and what is being done to ensure that there will always be a free version of MySQL (under the name of MariaDB).

We'll also delve into the challenges encountered with this fork, including:

  • the merge with MySQL 5.5 and MySQL 5.6
  • the various systems (such as Buildbot) that have been used to build the binaries
  • how they are working with the MariaDB/MySQL community.
