The Bermuda Triangle of APIs

A session at droidcon 2012

Wednesday 14th March, 2012

10:30am to 11:00am (CET)

When starting to use my new Ice Cream Sandwich phone I noticed how many of the apps I frequently use annoy me by not adhering to some technical details the Android framework imposes. As soon as apps had automatically synced over from another account, they cluttered my SD card with folders at its root level. Only 10 non-system apps out of the 350+ installed apps restored settings or data from a previous device out of the box. This aims to be a 201 level talk about Backup and Restore, about correct usage of Data Storage, including the inevitable backward compatibility, as well as other parts of the API that have been around for a long time, but still only a handful of devs actually seem to be implementing. I will go beyond a quick documentation recap and show you some practical shortcuts and improvements that I used in my open source apps. With this knowledge it should be possible to finally implement these techniques in a short amount of time in your apps.
