We've spent 15 years mastering the art of controlling web layouts across browsers. CSS3, web fonts, and other new technologies seem to finally grant us ever more power to control what every user sees, down to the pixel. But do we actually control the visual experience? And is absolute control of the visual layer really our job? Transcend ancient definitions of design to become a craftsman of end-user experiences in a content-first world.

Jeffrey Zeldman

Dubbed the King of Web Standards by Business Week, Jeffrey Zeldman publishes A List Apart “for people who make websites” (alistapart.com), a leading journal of web design thought since 1998, and founded and is executive creative director of Happy Cog™ (happycog.com) a design agency with studios in New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. He has written two books, notably the foundational web standards text, Designing With Web Standards 3rd Edition with Ethan Marcotte.

In 2012, Jeffrey Zeldman was the first designer inducted in the SXSW Interactive Hall of Fame. He tweets prolifically at @zeldman and has blogged and shared web design concepts and techniques at Jeffrey Zeldman Presents (zeldman.com) since 1995.

Jeffrey co-founded the multi-city web design conference An Event Apart (aneventapart.com) with Eric Meyer, and co-founded and publishes A Book Apart (abookapart.com), brief books for people who make websites with Mandy Brown and Jason Santa Maria. He hosts weekly design podcast The Big Web Show (.net Magazine Video Podcast of the Year 2010, and Podcast of the Year 2011), and is a faculty member on the MFA, Interaction Design program at School of Visual Arts.
