  • Opening Keynote: The New Wave Utility Belt

    by Addy Osmani

Whether you're using JavaScript or CoffeeScript, LESS or SASS, building an awesome webapp these days usually requires a plethora of boilerplates, frameworks, tools and a lot of glue to get them to work together. In short, you need a kick-ass utility belt. From performance tuning to build tools, in this session you'll get a complete overview of the current tooling ecosystem and learn about a new tool for app developers by Google that tries to bring all of the pieces of this ecosystem together for you. It's called Yeoman and we think it's going to make your life simpler.

    At 9:05am to 9:45am, Wednesday 28th November

    In Prague Congress Centre

  • Sass & Compass: Untangle your Stylesheets

In this session, Roy will cover the rationale behind Sass, syntax, new features and best practices. Writing CSS isn't fun. Repeating the same selectors over and over, hand-crafting sprites and writing vendor prefixes make CSS the source of many headaches. Sass and Compass fix those issues and many more. This is why concepts from Sass are making their way into the W3C specifications right now. While Sass already was powerful, the soon to be released version 3.2 brings great new features. Learn that working with media queries will be more intuitive and placeholder selectors really do make for Sahara-like DRY code.

  • Web Fonts Backstage and On Stage

    by Tim Ahrens

The “big bang” of Web fonts in 2010 — when browsers started supporting downloadable fonts — started a revolution in Web typography. Being able to choose from a wide variety of fonts has given us new forms of expression and almost closed the gap to the printed world. Now that there are no major technical challenges any more and Web fonts are easy to “get to work”, it is time to raise the bar: how can we make them look great? How do type design and rendering technology interact? What do Web fonts look like inside? How do foundries optimize their fonts? What can the font user contribute to make the final result look as good as it possibly gets?

  • Lessons Learned From Starting a Web Based Business

In early 2012 they both decided to move their focus away from design and development client work to building products - both analogue and digital - to be sold via the web. In this session Keir will share a number of personal insights from the journey so far - the good, the bad and the occasionally ugly tale of turning a side project into a web based business. Topics include: + Choosing you collaborators + Setting up your business + The hidden fees + Opening up shop online + Ways of supplementing your income stream + Why you should share and give things away for free

  • Augmented Reality and the Web

    by Philipp Nagele

With new interfaces coming up (think of Google Glasses) service providers are facing the challenge to adapt their mobile offering to the new "screen" Augmented Reality. Web technologies are the right solution to tackle that problem. We are going to dive into creating Augmented Reality content based using standard web technologies and tools - namely HTML, JavaScript and CSS. Starting with basic interaction elements like Head-Up displays and geo-based POIs, the session will also cover interactive elements, multi-media support and marker based (image recognition) Augmented Reality. Where sensor-based and marker-based AR were seen as two separate approaches, the combination of both produces the best results in user experience. Demos and samples built using Wikitude’s ARchitect toolkit will highlight the current possibilities of modern Augmented Reality engines.

With some minimal code changes and some smart utilities, you can maximize your scalability and performance. Keywords: Varnish, PHP-FPM, Nginx, APC, CDN, Memcached and a proper server setup. I'll show you how you can make a slow app with a crappy code base go mighty fast on one and even multiple servers. The focus of this talk is to cure first and eventually learn and prevent.

  • The Need for S.P.E.E.D. (Losing The Project Fatigue & Bringing Back The Fun)

    by Matt Gifford

The day-to-day focus for many businesses and agencies is to simply ‘get this project out’. However, constant set backs during delivery can cost unnecessary time and money, increase workplace dissatisfaction and impact overall operational effectiveness.

    Not cool.

The sad irony is that the time and costs it would take to analyse and address these operational deficiencies is FAR LESS than the hours and resultant costs of not addressing them.

Join Matt to discover how you can break out of the ‘just get it out’ mind-set, stop fighting fires and bring joy back into your working life and projects.
