#GameLabBrighton is a free game developer hack day to be held at the Lab for the Recently Possible in Brighton on the 4th August 2012. We will be bringing together developers, designers and artists into one space and encouraging them to work together to create games and push technical boundaries.
At #GameLabBrighton, there are 3 rules:
Get creative.
At the beginning of July, we will announce a theme via Twitter to base your game idea around. This will be something like a key word or phrase to spark your imagination, but it won’t be a limitation on genre or platform. The rest is up to you. We’ll have an Xbox 360, Kinect and Arduino on site, along with some other toys we’ve yet to announce. Bring your ideas and your computer and let’s see what happens!
Try something new.
In keeping with the spirit of the Lab, we will be encouraging people to try something they have never tried before, preferably something ‘recently possible’.
Developers: Many of you will want to try JavaScript/HTML5 games, but don’t feel that you’re limited to this. Maybe you’ve never touched console development and want to try out XNA or Unity. Maybe you’re a Flash dev and haven’t yet tried Alchemy. Or perhaps you’re an iPhone dev and want to try Android or Windows Phone. This is the place to give it a go!
Designers and Artists: It’s your call! Work with the developers, see what ‘feels right’, and push yourself to try a new style or new genre.
Help each other.
The only hard and fast rule of the Lab is “if someone needs help, and you know how to help them, then you have to help them”.
We want to create an atmosphere where newcomers mix with experienced developers, and we feel that enforcing a rule where assisting other attendees is mandatory is the best way to share and help others be free to create.
We will be limited to 25 places initially, and entry is free. If people want to go on after 6pm, we could extend the event into the night...
