I am interested in materials that speak simultaneously in two languages–such as a teabowl that appears to be made of Raku ware ceramic but in fact is made of lacquered papier mache. Such works are often discussed in terms of visual trickery, but might we instead think about such mimicry in the context of science and innovation as a way of exploring the possibilities of both familiar and new materials.
