Introduction to Startup Valuation

A session at Introduction to Startup Valuations

Tuesday 10th April, 2012

6:30pm to 8:00pm (GMT)

How do you value an idea, a team, a company without profits or even revenues? This class will provide students with a set of tools and models used by investors and entrepreneurs to value early stage companies. We will also review how fundraising affects the long-term value, dilution and ownership of a company. You will leave the class with a deeper understanding next time you have a conversation about financing, as well as understand how to quickly value other startups.

The class will include the following:

  • Fundamental concepts about valuation including cash flows, discount rates and multiples.
  • The opportunity cost model. How to value yourself.
  • A valuation of a Facebook user/session.
  • A case study of Skype.
  • A review of convertible notes and when they make sense.
  • A review of valuations in London vs US, including accelerator programs.
  • A VC's perspective, a case study of a VC fund cycle and returns.

This is an interactive lecture and will involve some simple math! There will also be a Q&A session where students can ask any questions relevant to their particular situation.
