Mahwish Chishty: Spinning II

13 21 October 2012

Currently in read only mode, sorry about that, please try again in a few hours.

Spinning II is a fusion of spheres within a very simple frame. In a stop-animation video, viewers see white cloth surrounded by an embroidery loom. The cloth slowly becomes covered with black stitched text until the words blur together. In the animated composition of almost 3,000 photographs Chishty took over a period of three-to-four weeks, the artist merges technology with craft, her personal identities as an artist and a Muslim woman, and more broadly, ancient Sufi religious practices and Arabic Kufic script.
