  • (101) Visualizing the Viral Impact of Creative Commons Content

    Participants will work together to design a tool capable of harnessing existing services such as search engines, social media APIs and data visualization libraries to create a visual picture of how items of Creative Commons content are being viewed, shared and republished over time.

    Why?

    While established content providers seek to protect their content and prevent unauthorised republication, increasing numbers of people -- including our initiative, Visualizing Palestine -- now seek the opposite, using Creative Commons and other copyleft licenses to positively encourage the unrestricted sharing and reproduction of their work.

    However, this leaves us with the challenge of how to track and measure where our content is being shared and republished. While individual platforms, such as Facebook and YouTube offer statistics on the viewing and sharing of content at its original point of publication, there is no single tool suited to analyzing the wider sharing and republication of work across the web.

    What's the session format?

    • Short intro to the design challenge brief.
    • Brainstorm on the modes through which content is shared and republished, and what tools are available to track this.
    • Work in small groups to develop paper prototypes, code and visualization concepts.
    • Bringing together finished ideas and deciding on next steps.

    Who should come?

    • Anyone with creative ideas and/or experience in coding, data scraping or dynamic data visualization

  • (103) Interactive Storytelling with Zeega

    Zeega is an open-source HTML5 platform that came out of the idea that people should be able to make interactive stories on the internet without having to program. We don’t believe technical knowledge or budgets should be a constraint for exploring the creative possibilities of the web. Zeega’s team of journalists, documentary artists and creative technologists will share Zeega's latest tools and work with participants to create interactive experiences with original and web-based audio, photos, videos and text. For hackers, there will be a breakout session to explore the Zeega application ecosystem, from Backbone Boilerplate-based frontend apps to the core API.

  • (209) Teach someone something with open content using School of Open

    Come join us on the 2nd floor in Room 209!

    Are you passionate about openness (open kitten photos, open textbooks, open data, open anything!) -- but don't quite know how to explain it to your mom? Or maybe you just want to learn more about how "open" can help you. Come join a community of your peers at the School of Open!

    You will learn how to teach someone something with open content, by finding, using, and sharing open content on the web on your "open" topic of interest. You will also make (and in the process learn how to design effectively) what you taught into a P2PU course.

    School of Open is a community that builds and runs courses on the meaning and application of "openness" in the digital age and its benefit to creative endeavors, education, research, and beyond. It is coordinated by P2PU and Creative Commons.

    The session will be split up into three parts:

    1) Introductory exercises
    2) Taking an open challenge
    3) Building the results into a School of Open course.

  • (211) Build A Powerful, Fully-Responsive Content Page With Foundation

    In our Learning Lab, attendees will create a content page for one of their projects from the Festival and test it across multiple devices. Attendees who don’t have projects will build a responsive page that can be adapted to future Festival projects. We’ll use our front-end responsive framework, Foundation, to accomplish this.

    In our multi-device World, it’s crucial to design with multiple devices in mind. We’ll walk through specific examples for designers to grasp various responsive design concepts.

    • Build a responsive content page using Foundation templates as a baseline

  • (212) Semantic Editing on a Tablet

    We will start with a new remixing, semantic web editor, based on the Aloha editor, and extended to create and edit remixable, semantic, structured content, in a way that is designed to be used by any author, anywhere.

    The design challenge is to figure out what kinds of editing people will want to do on their tablet devices and how to support them. We will also experiment with adapting to code and demo our ideas on other festival goers!

    After a brief intro and demonstration of the editor, we will divide divide into small groups and brainstorm about how people will edit on their tablets. Each group will present and choose a use case, then groups of developers and designers and design ui to support those stories. In the final portion, developers will attempt to encode the new designs.

    Participants will join in a facilitated and participatory discussion designed to make explicit the activation of a teaching, learning and engagement zone within Mozfest. The discussion will involve project shout-outs, brainstorming and the presentation of interest-based projects and ideas that participants would like to prototype, design and build during the festival. Participants will quickly present (three minutes or less) their projects, prototypes and half-baked ideas to the group and pick-up the gauntlet to become an activated educator—or “Hacktivator”—dedicated to using the web and its accompanying skills and literacies to change how people make, share and learn.

  • (702) Alligator Clip the Internet to Your World with MaKey MaKey

    MaKey MaKey lets you turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. It's an invention kit for everyone, making creative physical computing accessible with no electronics and no programming required.

    The MaKey MaKey circuit board pretends it's a USB keyboard, but you make your own keys by alligator clipping it to objects that are at least a little bit conductive. Press the spacebar by completing a circuit when you touch a banana, your grandma, or a penny. Make a piano out of pastries, or a game controller out of play-doh.

    In this session, after a quick intro to MaKey MaKey, we'll spend our time tinkering and hacking. We'll focus on inventions that extend open source web technologies into the physical world in playful new ways.

    Beginning with a brief intro to the MaKey MaKey kit, participants will move quickly to having a chance to try it out individually or in small groups. We'll do some brainstorming together, spend most of the time hacking together crazy inventions, and then wrap up with demos and reflection.

    We will plan to have a variety of materials on hand for people to build with, including conductive materials, craft materials, and tools.

  • (703) Physical Computing The Easy Way

    People who have never programmed anything will become Physical Computing programmers, by using Waterbear, a drag-and-drop visual environment for programming. This allows users to write code by snapping blocks together like Legos, and to build by exploring.

    We will build Arduino powered sweet dispensers where your sweets are secured by physical passwords which we will code using Waterbear for Arduino.

    You will learn the skills to code for Arduino at home and teach your own Arduino coding workshops without typing or knowing any syntax. Waterbear for Arduino is entirely web-based, all you need is a browser that can access the website and an Ardunio.

    Learn how to use Meemoo to hack images and turn them into animated gifs!
    We will experiment with stop motion, image filters, green screen, and other image hacks.

    Once you have animated images, you will use Thimble to make an "animated comic strip" with titles and links.

    You will start by making an animation with your face and move on to build a scene with craft materials and create a simple animation.

  • (800) 3D Graphics Jam

    Graphics on the web have matured beyond <marquee> and animated gifs, and with recent advances in browser-integrated 3D WebGL graphics and JavaScript performance it's time to step up your game.

    We represent CubicVR.js, a high-performance WebGL-powered 3D engine with a versatile collection of built-in features and starter-projects for you to build upon.

    You will be exposed to basic CubicVR.js setup, primitives, animation, COLLADA asset support and integrated physics provided by Ammo.js. Topics will range from beginner to advanced usage of the CubicVR.js API, with results ranging from simple graphics demos to playable mini-games. You will also have the opportunity to participate during the presentation using our live coding environment.

    Take-aways:

    • Rapid implementation of 3D graphics support for your project using the CubicVR.js API
    • Build upon default CubicVR.js sample projects to become familiar with the basics
    • Learn to use basic CubicVR.js code by example building up a project in steps
    • Demonstrate using assets from external source such as Blender 3D Modeller

    We'll sharing our experiences developing Zombies, Run!, the differences between Android and iOS, and how we have solved the same problems on different platforms with different solutions.

    At Mind Candy we make Moshi Monsters for the web, mobile and 'real world' as well! Because we love creating new games, we have regular Game Jams where we have an hour or three to make up a fun new game from scratch using any technology (even paper and pen). We also run and host other game jams, including the Best of British Jam and the first Women-only Game Jam.

    We'll be running a Game Jam on HTML5 tech, challenging participants to just get anything running that's playable and fun! We will bring mentors with tons of experience coming up with & implementing new games really quickly (and unusually in some cases) and be around to help brainstorm games and help with implementation issues too.

    We will provide several 'starting games' so you can hack a working game rather than start from scratch!

    Inspired by Grow-A-Game, this session will allow you to prototype a game starting with something we are all familiar with: verbs! Whether it is running or collecting, shooting or trading, games are driven by verbs. We will look at classic games in terms of verbs and explore how these verbs express messages and values. Then we will modify these games, changing the verbs so that they express our own messages and values.

  • (902) Data Expeditions: Scout the Data Landscape with our Data Sherpas

    In this session we will start expeditions into different datasets. The data we'll explore and cartograph will range from financial to environmental and geographical data - and possibly beyond! Participants will join an expedition and discover and map the landscape that they find. Throughout, there will be an emphasis on developing and improving data wrangling skills and techniques.

    After a short round of introductions of different expedition areas, we will form expedition teams, set out to explore the data at hand, create an expedition journal and map out the landscape we find. The expeditions will be supported by Open Knowledge Foundation sherpas, spirit guides and compass readers, who will pull explorers out of the ditch whenever stuck.

    Currently we are preparing to set out to three distinct expeditions:

    • An expedition to the hidden islands of off-shore tax evasion,
    • Drilling deep into the caverns of some of the extractive industries data and
    • Responding to a call for help from three African nations to solve the mysterious drop in life expectancy they experienced

    What is a ‘Data Expedition’?

    Data expeditions are a experimental concept we at the School of Data have decided to try. They are hands on workshops with guidance and direction – however the participants (adventurers) are not lectured, they learn data-wrangling skills by being confronted with real life data, problems and questions. Our sherpas will guide their pack to useful data sources, tools and resources to help climb the data mountian, but exact routes taken and questions answered will be determined by the participants. In a Data Expedition, the amount you learn depends only on your ambition, we’re aiming to teach you how to learn, not to spoonfeed you answers. Be aware that if you keep wandering off into the woods there might be dragons (just to bring you back on the road).

    Who can participate?

    We’re looking for Adventurers and Explorers with skillsets ranging from storytelling via heavy code-forging to graphic design. All skill levels are needed and the more diverse the party the better chance to survive and complete the expeditions. Teaming up with people having different skillsets and levels will be beneficial for participants.

    Will anyone die in the process?

    Hopefully not. Data is generally safer than real blizzards, but can be equally overwhelming.

    Take-aways:

    • Each team will create a "map of the data landscape".
    • The documents will then be published on the School of Data or OpenSpending to inspire further expeditions - there is plenty of uncharted territory in the vast data landscape.

    Second Screen Applications extend and enhance content information streams and synchronize alternative content on and via portable devices (the second screen).

    Join a complex and fascinating discussion and prototyping session among a diverse group of experts and interested parties, discussing and demonstrating second-screen concepts. We'll be generating a lot of creative content together - paper prototypes, sketches, blog posts and resources for exploring demos and other inspirational second-screen work.

    Session finale will involve identifying new technologies, possibilities and proposing solutions for creating new second-screen applications.

  • (906) Tips and tricks using digital journalism tools for newsgathering

    Journalists and those interested in reporting will learn how to use digital journalism tools for newsgathering.

    We will take five news stories and use different tools to track down potential sources and verify facts. For example, we may want to find tweets originating in Benghazi the previous day, build a map of tweets sent with a particular hashtag from a given location, and we can then seek to verify images shared on social media.

  • (601) Designing Open Badges in the Wild

    Open Badges are a relatively new concept in UK education - both formal and informal. Unlike in the US where there are a number of DML Competition-funded projects mid-way through their work, there is only one of these in the UK (Supporter2Reporter). Nevertheless, there are a number of people already doing some work in the area.

    This session will allow participants to discuss how badges might be used within a UK context, as well as facilitate partnerships and understanding between diverse organisations. We'd like to get people thinking through badge system design in their particular context(s) and have a go at creating a badge in the session itself.

    This session will be divided into two, one-hour sessions:

    _Session 1

    • Opening icebreaker activity
    • Circle of people's experiences and context
    • Overview of Open Badges and what people are doing with them - participants come up with three 'tags' for their (planned) project
    • Break into small groups based on shared interests
    • Circle with feedback from groups and further discussion

  • (605) Super Heroes of Mozfest—An Exposé

    Superheroes of MozFest is a gripping three-minute video about a new species of humanoid—the Webmaker. This collaboratively-produced video montage provides insight into the webmaker’s habits, characteristics, and habitat by profiling a handful of individuals participating in MozFest, an annual gathering that attracts hominids interested in learning about, and playing with, the future of the World Wide Web.

    Join other teens from WNYC Radio Rookies, Global Action Project and REV- to remix footage from nature docs, interview characters from within the halls at Ravensbourne and help tell a story about MozFest unlike any other previously told.

The goal will be to catalyze the educator community at MozFest and collectively develop new approaches to teaching and learning on the web. Together we'll envision prototypes, frameworks, and projects to fuel interest-based learning activities on the web. We'll explore intersections between code, content, teaching and learning. Through ideation and collaboration, we'll create paper prototypes and designs for things we want to build and/or prototype over the weekend.

    What this is all about:

    Thanks to the Web, the range of citizen science projects has exploded in recent years, ranging from computing climate models to folding proteins to sensing earthquakes. These projects have traditionally been developed by individual research groups in narrow software silos.

    But the rise of browser-based apps and the growing power of mobile devices enables new mash-ups of volunteer-based computing, sensing and thinking. Rapid prototyping of novel citizen science projects, accessible to amateur as well as professional scientists, could be just around the corner.

    How can we nurture the rise of this new type of citizen science on the Web? What are the research opportunities that this could open, and what are the risks?

  • (800) Build and Publish Games within the Browser

    We will show how to build a game, using our browser based tools called Play My Code. We will all start with a blank project, and slowly build it up, showing features as we go, until we have a complete game.

    We'll be encouraging students to constantly check their code to see the effect of every change, provide feedback for their programming, and discuss why one option might be better than another.

    The session will show:
    * How to create a new game from a blank slate
    * Many of the basics that make up a good game
    * Ways in which they could take this further

    Take-aways:

    • by the end of the session you will have a complete game that you can publish online
    • know how to build future games online on your own
    • understand the key concepts behind building a game, which they can apply to other languages

    Who should come?

    • As many people are welcome to join as they want. We aim to have mostly beginner and intermediate programmers; however more experienced programmers are welcome.

    Markup and style a news article and test your media awareness by remixing web news articles to see how the style and structure of a piece can change the message: how does the medium change the message?

    We're working on building a "hactivity kit" for organizers to take to use Thimble to teach HTML and general concepts of the open web and hacking to journalists. In this session, we'll work together to hack the kit itself and complete projects described in the kit.
