  • (702) Alligator Clip the Internet to Your World with MaKey MaKey

    MaKey MaKey lets you turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. It's an invention kit for everyone, making creative physical computing accessible with no electronics and no programming required.

    The MaKey MaKey circuit board pretends it's a USB keyboard, but you make your own keys by alligator clipping it to objects that are at least a little bit conductive. Press the spacebar by completing a circuit when you touch a banana, your grandma, or a penny. Make a piano out of pastries, or a game controller out of play-doh.

    In this session, after a quick intro to MaKey MaKey, we'll spend our time tinkering and hacking. We'll focus on inventions that extend open source web technologies into the physical world in playful new ways.

    Beginning with a brief intro to the MaKey MaKey kit, participants will move quickly to having a chance to try it out individually or in small groups. We'll do some brainstorming together, spend most of the time hacking together crazy inventions, and then wrap up with demos and reflection.

    We will plan to have a variety of materials on hand for people to build with, including conductive materials, craft materials, and tools.

  • (703) Physical Computing The Easy Way

    People who have never programmed anything will become Physical Computing programmers, by using Waterbear, a drag-and-drop visual environment for programming. This allows users to write code by snapping blocks together like Legos, and to build by exploring.

    We will build Arduino powered sweet dispensers where your sweets are secured by physical passwords which we will code using Waterbear for Arduino.

    You will learn the skills to code for Arduino at home and teach your own Arduino coding workshops without typing or knowing any syntax. Waterbear for Arduino is entirely web-based, all you need is a browser that can access the website and an Ardunio.

  • (706) Make an Animated GIF Comic

    Learn how to use Meemoo to hack images and turn them into animated gifs!
    We will experiment with stop motion, image filters, green screen, and other image hacks.

    Once you have animated images, you will use Thimble to make an "animated comic strip" with titles and links.

    You will start by making an animation with your face and move on to build a scene with craft materials and create a simple animation.

  • (601) Designing Open Badges in the Wild

    Open Badges are a relatively new concept in UK education - both formal and informal. Unlike in the US where there are a number of DML Competition-funded projects mid-way through their work, there is only one of these in the UK (Supporter2Reporter). Nevertheless, there are a number of people already doing some work in the area.

    This session will allow participants to discuss how badges might be used within a UK context, as well as facilitate partnerships and understanding between diverse organisations. We'd like to get people thinking through badge system design in their particular context(s) and have a go at creating a badge in the session itself.

    This session will be divided into two, one-hour sessions:

    _Session 1

    • Opening icebreaker activity
    • Circle of people's experiences and context
    • Overview of Open Badges and what people are doing with them - participants come up with three 'tags' for their (planned) project
    • Break into small groups based on shared interests
    • Circle with feedback from groups and further discussion
    • Preparation for Session 2

    • Opening circle, welcoming new arrivals
    • Quick overview of Session 1
    • Groups start designing badge, starting with behaviours they want to promote and moving on to considering metadata to include
    • Quick break to share what groups have done so far

    Superheroes of MozFest is a gripping three-minute video about a new species of humanoid—the Webmaker. This collaboratively-produced video montage provides insight into the webmaker’s habits, characteristics, and habitat by profiling a handful of individuals participating in MozFest, an annual gathering that attracts hominids interested in learning about, and playing with, the future of the World Wide Web.

    Join other teens from WNYC Radio Rookies, Global Action Project and REV- to remix footage from nature docs, interview characters from within the halls at Ravensbourne and help tell a story about MozFest unlike any other previously told.

    We will show how to build a game, using our browser based tools called Play My Code. We will all start with a blank project, and slowly build it up, showing features as we go, until we have a complete game.

    We'll be encouraging students to constantly check their code to see the effect of every change, provide feedback for their programming, and discuss why one option might be better than another.

    The session will show:
    * How to create a new game from a blank slate
    * Many of the basics that make up a good game
    * Ways in which they could take this further

    Take-aways:

    • by the end of the session you will have a complete game that you can publish online
    • know how to build future games online on your own
    • understand the key concepts behind building a game, which they can apply to other languages

  • (702) Coding for Everyone: Explore the Next Generation of Scratch

    Participants will learn to create interactive stories, games, animations, and simulations with Scratch 2.0, the next generation of the Scratch graphical-programming language. The session will focus especially on the new features of Scratch 2.0, such as:

    • responding to movements and gestures in the physical world (similar to Microsoft Kinect), using new camera-sensing programming blocks
    • cloning objects dynamically to create a wider range of games and simulations
    • storing “persistent data” in the cloud to create online surveys and high-scores lists
    • creating customized procedure blocks to abstract common coding patterns

    There will be a short introduction to Waterbear and demonstration of how to drag blocks together to create a simple animation.

    You can solve a challenge, or if you would like to code your own ideas you can branch out on your own. Facilitators will be available to provide tips and help out if anyone is stuck.

    We are going to create a “rabbit hole”; where we challenge you to hack some form of media in an unexpected way that creatively leads a user into your story or game. (For example, you could create a site that places instagram photos into comic book style frames, automatically changing the narrative every time you take a photo)

    We will explore questions like:

    • What sensations are lost or changed through digital communication?
    • Compare gchatting or texting to the last time you talked to a friend for a long time in person.
    • Compare a videogame to a game of tag.

    Take-aways:

    • we'll look at creating story structures and enhancing online experiences with meaning and richness
    • we'll brainstorm media that we already use or would like to adapt
    • we'll create the first scene/intro to your story using your chosen media in an unintended way

    We will begin by presenting cool examples of one button games that were built with in a short period of time for inspiration, then we'll cover the idea of making games for cabinets.. Participants will then be asked to break up into groups, and to make their own one button game.

    In order to accommodate a wide range of participants with varying skills, we will make available tools to create games and even games that only require hacking and modding in Scratch.

  • (702) Scratch meets Mozilla Thimble

    Scratch 2.0 allows you to create interactive games and animations while Thimble makes it incredibly easy to create and host your own webpage. Together they allow you to build rich web experiences right in your browser. Participants will learn how to use these applications together to easily create and host their own webpages with games and animations.

    Our session will begin with a look at example projects created in Scratch and example websites created with Thimble. We’ll then walk through the creation of a simple website in Thimble and a simple project in Scratch and learn how to combine the two.

    Once you have the basics down, you'll brainstorm ideas and then create your own interactive website (with support from the facilitators). You could make a simple game, a web poll, a tutorial site and so much more.

    The session will end with a show and tell and a group discussion.

  • (800) Game Design = System Hacking

    Designing games is an act of system hacking. You can approach the design of games from many directions. You can start with a mechanic you think holds the possibility to engage players. You can begin with the intention of invoking a feeling in players. Build up systems, tear them apart and build them back up. System hacking allows designers to learn to identify weaknesses and strengths and exploit them to new and novel ends.

    In this session, we'll take apart the rule systems behind several popular physical games, like "Ninja" and hack those games into new experiences. What we'll find is that anyone can modify a game. The tricky part is modifying rules to produce specific aesthetic goals. But with analysis of existing game systems and design through a process of iteration, we'll find that we can begin to bend game systems and other user experience systems to our aims.

    Take-aways:

    • Participants will learn how to analyze rules and systems underlying games, how to approach the reconfiguration of existing systems and the creation of new systems.
    • How to paper prototype, develop an ability to iterate new designs quickly, and how to make modifications of an existing game.

  • (803) Remix games with Craftyy

    We'll explore the Craftyy editor, a drag-and-drop way to make & remix HTML5 games, all in the browser.

    We'll go through the basics of each step in the game development process, remixing each others' games in the process.

    You'll learn how to do the following with Craftyy:

    • Design: The basic drag & drop
    • Art: Creating and remixing art
    • Code: Changing the mechanics
    • Remixing: How you can reuse parts of other games in your own
    • Publishing: Share your games to a growing game tree

    And by the end, you'll have collaboratively made an HTML5 game you can embed in your site or blog!

    How will we do all that? We'll do something we call the Exquisite Corpse Roundtable.

    Sounds horrifying, doesn't it? Well, the Exquisite Corpse is a game where each player draws part of an image, then passes it to the next player for further contribution. We'll be doing that, except with games.

    • At the start of each round, we teach you a new aspect of Craftyy.
    • Each group gets to apply that to their new game
    • At the end of each round, each group passes their game to another.
    • Repeat.

    Popcorn opens up a whole new opportunity for instructional videos to evolve just like wiki articles do. wikiHow, a collaborative site with almost 150,000 articles, is here to show you how to create and edit awesome how-to videos that improve over time.

    You'll get to watch some fun video demos and edit blank how-to videos in Popcorn Webmaker that you can embed on wikiHow for the world to see.

    • Hands-on experience editing how-to videos made specifically with Popcorn in mind
    • A better understanding of collaboration and wiki culture

  • (700) Meet the MozFest Young Reporters

    Share the story of our Mozfest Young Reporters, who will introduce themselves and share their skills in filming and interviewing on to participants. Having spent the day reporting around the festival, interviewers will become interviewees, giving participants the chance to quiz the reporter team.

    The team are experienced reporters aged between 15-19, with aspirations in digital media and journalism, who’ve been part of Digital Me’s reporting teams for Supporter To Reporter (our national sports reporting project which we’re developing Open Badges for), LS Live (an event reporting project) and Young Presenters (who reported live at the Olympic and Paralympic Games at London 2012).

    The team will introduce themselves and describe their journey as a young reporter so far (which may span several years or a few months), explain a bit about the projects they have been involved in, the skills they’ve learnt, and give their take on the Festival - what has inspired them the most, and more.

    Then, they’ll pass on some basic skills and share their top tips for interviewing. Participants will then get the chance to interview the young reporters, on any topic they desire! Working with the young people, they’ll develop a set of questions then perform a short interview for their group, which could quiz them on their experiences as a reporter, career aspirations, thoughts on the festival or opinions on anything and everything to do with open source web.

    This session shines the spotlight on the many important contributions from young people in the world of Webmaking and developing, and give them a new challenge to present their journey and pass on their skills.

    Hackerspaces and makerspaces have enabled people with common interests to create, connect, and collaborate on projects in shared, community-operated spaces. However, these hackerspaces are often the domains of adults and already enthusiastic inventors of all trades, such as artists, designers, engineers, and hobbyists. How can we design a community space, like playgrounds, to be accessible to children, their families, and community members who are less familiar with the tools, activities, and, at times, implicit social norms that come with these spaces?
