The Joys and Perils of Typography in Cocoa

A session at Objective-Cologne

Typography has always been an issue close to Apple’s heart. In this talk, a brief overview of typographic concepts and available text technologies on OS X and iOS will be given, with a more in-depth look at Core Text. Besides fundamentals of programming a C-based Apple-API and the principles of the framework (including an important CTFramesetter workaround), an example of a high-level wrapper architecture for easier typesetting will be examined. Finally, new light-weight alternatives to Core Text, which are introduced in iOS 6, will be presented.
