Using Mobile Technology to Improve Patient Engagement and Outcomes

A session at Strata Rx

  • Stanley James, MD
  • Daniel Fitzpatrick, MD

Tuesday 16th October, 2012

1:15pm to 1:55pm (PST)

The adoption of electronic health records allows providers nearly limitless access to data for medical decision-making. Unfortunately, the vast amount of data available sometimes results in medical errors, as important clinical data is lost in the morass of extraneous data collected for non-clinical functions.

Additionally, because of the volumes of data available to the provider at each office or hospital visit, much of the valuable patient interaction time is spent focused on the computer screen rather than the patient. This problem is compounded by the need to enter additional discrete data into the medical record, often requiring the provider to ‘point and click’ buttons to build the medical record. The resulting documentation, although data rich, results in a medical record that often fails to provide an accurate picture of the patient’s medical condition.

This panel discussion will explore this ‘data saturation’ problem from the provider’s point of view, including the disruption of clinical workflows and physician-patient interaction. The discussion will explore the concept that mobile computing, specifically with tablet computers, holds the promise of allowing data to be presented to the provider in efficient, workflow-enhancing manners. The advantages of mobile tablet computers in returning the providers focus to the patient will be discussed. Finally, innovative ways to move data back into the electronic health record, while maintaining an efficient workflow and readable medical record, are explored.

The panel includes: Dr. Daniel Fitzpatrick, MD – a practicing orthopedic surgeon. Cale Bruckner – VP, Technology for Concentric Sky – a leading mobile developer and consultancy. Jonathon Dreyer – Senior Manager, Mobile Solutions Marketing, Healthcare Division at Nuance Communications. Dr. Stanley James – MD – a leader and innovator in orthopedic surgery that has operated on numerous Olympic and professional athletes. Dr. Dan Coite, MD – homephysicians.com. Kin Lane – Technology Evangelist (possible moderator)
