This is a “come as you are” session meant to accommodate mixed levels of experience with minimal need for special equipment or previous experience (read: no mats or yoga clothing required.) Special emphasis is placed on postures and practices to help those of us that sit at desks and use computers regularly. Much of what you learn here will help you build a home/work practice that is therapeutic and adjustable to your needs. Yoga was created thousands of years ago as a way to clear the mind in preparation for enlightenment. What better way to prepare for for the busy days of networking, information and fun at SXSW? Digital health is an emerging industry at the intersection of technology and health, radically changing how we access and use personal health information. It unites smartphones/tablets (new means of 24/7 access to information), with big data in the cloud (enabling personalization), game dynamics / mechanics (new engagement mechanisms), the increased engagement of physicians online (interactive doctors), and a vibrant social conversation about health. The panel, composed of pioneers in this new space (WIRED Magazine, HealthTap, Rock Health, Massive Health, CakeHealth, others), will explore why Digital Health is happening now, and how it is poised to forever transform how we access and use personal health information, how we manage our personal health, and how we interact with physicians using online/mobile applications. The panel will discuss the future of online/mobile health information, apps, and interactions, and disruptive emerging trends in the health space.
A recent article in Health Affairs titled: “Games for Health: the Latest Tool in the Medical Care Arsenal” stated that “computer-based simulations and interactive programs are introducing a powerful new force in health care: FUN”. At the same time the article also noting that “new tools in health care are proliferating like viral spoors in a virtual pond.” While there is a growing proliferation of stand alone health games, this panel will consider the specific use of health games embedded in persistent avatar-based worlds where users manage the health and well being of their avatars as virtual substitutes for their own health and wellness. The panel will present actual data from use cases ranging from tweens to boomers, including what evidence is available to suggest that virtual behavior crosses into behavior in the real world. The panel will also discuss how new mobile health devices are likely to contribute to the blending of virtual and real worlds.
