Where Do Science Fiction and Science Fact Meet?
What kind of future do you want to live in? What excites or concerns you about the future? Intel Futurist Brian David Johnson poses these questions as part of The Tomorrow Project, an initiative to investigate not only the future of computing but also the broader implications on our lives and the planet. Science and technology have progressed to the point where what we build is only constrained by the limits of our own imaginations. The future is not a fixed point in front of us that we are all hurtling helplessly towards. The future is built everyday by the actions of people. The Tomorrow Project engages in ongoing discussions with superstars, science fiction authors and scientists to get their visions for the world that's coming and the world they'd like to build.

Philanthropy Is Not the Future of Journalism

While donations play a key role in community support and engagement, the writing is on the wall regarding how much government, private and foundation funding will continue to be available to public media. As media that exists to serve the public, often the mass reach required to compete for the media dollars available for banner advertising is at odds with serving the public mission. We will look at specific examples of nonprofit news organizations developing mission-supported revenue streams, integrating donor relationships into marketing and advertising, and considering revenue streams that are separate from and/or compliment their mission.

Internationally-recognized Austin-based game-developer Richard Garriott talks about many of the concepts explored in his documentary film "Man on a Mission." This solo presentation will cover how the commercial space industry (as led by many in the new media industry) is changing the future. A member of the civilian NASA Advisory Council as well as the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, Garriott will also discuss what NASA and others are doing now, and why we should all be excited to play games from the surface of Mars sooner than you think!

Forget the hype surrounding the social web for a moment, what about something a little further out? This talk will paint a picture of two possible futures, along the way asking the audience to help decide in 2012 if either has a snowball's chance in hell of becoming a reality. Choose between:
1. Brands and users operate in a future-perfect environment of algorithm-driven, sublime relevance, where no nanobyte of data is wasted. Brands display artificial intelligence - becoming, in effect, self-aware - able to determine without human intervention how best to serve their customers. This leads to a glorious future of zero spam and delightful indolence amongst humanity as AI machines do all the work.. for now.

2. Brands and their users seek to fight for discovery and serendipity. Attempting at every juncture to circumvent the algorithmic tramlines laid down for their own good. Co-creating an open web with benevolent, politically neutral technology partners and real-world spaces where tech simply does not penetrate, this is the Wild West, 2050.

Surviving Technology

Friedman's talk will cover our current transition to spending more time speaking to more people (but with less substance), plus future of the human race transcending technology. Using examples with online dating vs the old ways of meeting people, this brilliant thinker will also discuss what society loses in our continuing embrace technology in the context of how we lost body language with the telephone.
