Training tutorial: A beginner's guide to Apache CouchDB

A session at ApacheCon North America 2013

  • Sam Bisbee

Monday 25th February, 2013

1:30pm to 5:00pm (PST)

It's quick to start using CouchDB, but it's easy to overlook early design decisions that will have long-term effects on app performance. So what's the best way to get started?

This training tutorial will walk beginners through initial database set up, introduce the Apache CouchDB API, explain CouchDB's take on MapReduce, and propose new ways to build fast and efficient CouchApps for data visualization. Attendees will be encouraged to play along using their own local instance of CouchDB as they go. The goal is for everyone to have a real, working CouchApp running in their browser by the end of the session.

After introducing the API, the session will ask attendees to solve some example problems using a set of GeoData based on the city of Portland. Once attendees are up to speed, the training will focus on:

(1) indexing and querying data in CouchDB (2) analyzing data structure design and anticipating the impact on future performance (3) building a two-tier application that visualizes large amounts of data directly in a modern Web browser
