Making designs work in Japanese and English in a Rails app

A session at Copenhagen Ruby Brigade, December 2013

How do you make those crazy 2-byte kanji characters fit in a layout that is designed to use the alphabet?
How do you control user input when a full sentence in English can often just be one word in Japanese?

This is a short talk about some of the things I've tried out during my time in Japan to work around these and other issues when handling multiple languages in a Rails app.
