Redevelopment of an Urban Landscape --> Geography, Math and Minecraft: An Inquiry Driven Project

A session at Bring IT, Together [ECOO & OASBO]

Thursday 24th October, 2013

1:00pm to 1:45pm (EST)

Presentation will provide information about how we used PROJECT BASED LEARNING, INQUIRY and MINECRAFT in the classroom.

Driven by the themes of geographic inquiry and social justice issues, students participated in an inquiry driven project that focused on the redevelopment of Hamilton’s West Harbour development area. This fully integrated unit allowed students to engage in a STEM focused project where they used real-life problems (and solutions) to design an idea concept for the area and to collaboratively build a model using the Minecraft platform with iPads, iPods, and Laptops. This presentation will demonstrate how students are using 21st Century tools like Minecraft to self-organize tasks that are rich in thinking, collaboration and design as part of their Math and Language programs. Those participants brave enough to take this leap and explore a new way of engaging their students will leave with concrete, doable ideas that they can use in their own practice. Resources will be provided.
