Unzipping the Genome Project Meme

A session at IA Summit 2013

Saturday 6th April, 2013

3:45pm to 4:30pm (EST)

Email, sales leads, art, Android malware – it seems everything has its own genome project these days. There’s a reason it was called the Music Genome Project and not the Genre-Specific Musical Attributes Taxonomy. Calling something a ‘genome project’ communicates something important – even for people with only the vaguest idea of what the Human Genome Project was and what might have been involved in mapping it.

We’ll look under the hood of this powerful metaphor and explore some reasons why it is so compelling. We’ll also explore some possible applications for UX practitioners. We may even make wild speculations about what a “UX genome project” might look like.
