Building nets for the ’net: harvesting online publications for Electronic Legal Deposit

A session at NDF2013

Tuesday 26th November, 2013

2:30pm to 2:55pm (NZMT)

New Zealand’s Electronic Legal Deposit legislation is among the most comprehensive in the world. While many national libraries and archives have established web archiving programs and are working with major publishers to archive their digital output, the Legal Deposit team at the National Library of New Zealand has the remit to archive everything published by New Zealand organisations or individuals online, in all formats. This often involves collecting born-digital material in the wild, from websites that were not designed with ease of document harvesting in mind. We will discuss how this requires a different approach to collecting, and how new digital tools can help the Legal Deposit team harvest the nation’s ever increasing born-digital heritage.
