An exciting pilot project kicked off in June 2013 with the aim of connecting more Auckland rangatahi with Alexander Turnbull Library collections, in turn connecting them to their own history, whakapapa and heritage. The project involved running a series of workshops and visits to empower a group of rangatahi to research, curate, design, develop and install their own group exhibition. The project, while encouraging a younger audience into the library, also promotes collaboration as part of the journey involved visits to other GLAM sector partners, including Auckland Libraries, Auckland Museum and Archives New Zealand. It is hoped this pilot will provide a template for similar outreach projects in the future.
Mereana Taungapeau is Heritage Programme Adviser Māori at Alexander Turnbull Library.
