Engaging Extension in Improving Health Literacy and Personal Health Management of Inmates in a County Jail

A session at Priester National Health Extension Conference

Wednesday 17th April, 2013

10:50am to 11:50am (PST)

This seminar will help participants gain a deeper understanding of health disparities of inmates in jails and how Extension is strategically positioned to help improve inmate health and community health. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires states to provide targeted outreach to underserved, vulnerable populations. This seminar will describe a collaborative community-based project designed to help inmates improve their health literacy, self-care management and personal health care decision-making. The project involves 12 one-hour computer-based training modules delivered with six handouts over a period of five days. The project has the potential for replication in other communities with minimal funding required.
