SDR, GSM/OpenBTS

A session at SIGINT 2013

Saturday 6th July, 2013

12:00pm to 12:45pm (CET)

New RF technology - exciting for good guys, bad guys, society...

Some words from a RF engineer who knows a bit of the white and the black side of the game and recently started playing with SDR technology, with a steep learning curve and amazing results.

This lecture should give some basic information about the possibilites of the broad availability of SDR techonlogy, the fun it brings, the possible influence on the society, the benefits and the risks. As an example a complete GSM base station will be set up right on the lecturers table to supply all participants with a fully functional GSM system, offering voice calls and SMS among them.

The lecturer is communications technology engineer, worked for six years as a radio tech very close with public safety radio users, watched the game from both sides of the fence, and obtained from that fascinating insights into public safety comms and also some electronic surveillance tactics. He is not a programmer, not a coder, more a RF/Hardware guy who gains much fun from playing with RF stuff, always in risk crossing the border causing "funny" side effects.
