A session at State of the Map 2013

Friday 6th September, 2013

3:30pm to 3:40pm (GMT)

Susanna Ånäs
Wikimaps is a proposal for an environment within Wikimedia to create a hub for historical map imagery of the world. We are working with Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums to bring high quality historical maps to Wikimedia Commons. Once we have created an environment in Wikimedia Commons to georeference and serve the maps, we can continue to next challenges. We expect to work with others in extracting information from the maps, creating and fostering a historical gazetteer that can be linked to all data within Wikimedia. Also, we look at how the data can be used to create data-driven maps for Wikipedia and others.
