Maplt Global: easy lookup of boundaries in OSM

A session at State of the Map 2013

Sunday 8th September, 2013

11:00am to 11:20am (GMT)

Matthew Somerville
For a wide variety of websites it's useful to be able to take a geographic coordinate and find the administrative areas covering that point. mySociety have created a service, "MapIt Global", providing a web-based API allowing you to find all the closed administrative boundaries in OpenStreetMap that cover a particular point: http://global.mapit.mysociety.org/. The service allows the download of shapefiles of boundaries in various formats and search for areas that are contained in, cover, intersect, etc. MapIt Global is Open Source software, licensed under the AGPL, and based entirely on OpenStreetMap data. mySociety will describe what was involved in extracting the data from OpenStreetMap and creating the service, as well as examples of its use in practice.
