Introduction to OpenStreetMap: Editing & Using the Map

A session at State of the Map US 2013

Friday 7th June, 2013

9:00am to 12:00pm (PST)

This beginners level, hands on workshop will start with an introduction to OpenStreetMap, the only free, open, and editable map of the world. Once everyone is familiar with how OpenStreetMap can be used, we'll walk through how you can make edits to add and update map data.

This morning workshop will be broken into three sessions:

  • Introduction to OpenStreetMap: What is OSM, how you can use it, how others are using it, and where to find resources to get you started. Presented by Mikel Maron, 9:00 am.
  • Map your neighborhood: This session will walk through the whole process of adding data to OpenStreetMap, covering where to map", "what to map" through to "how to use the editor". This will give you what you need to know to make sure your neighborhood is well represented. Presented by Richard Fairhurst, 10:00 am.
  • Using OpenStreetMap Data with ESRI ArcGIS: As an open resource, OpenStreetMap can be used within a range of systems to support specific workflows. This workshop will dive into the value proposition and technical how-to for using OSM within the context of your own business data in Esri's ArcGIS Platform. This workshop will also engage groups for open conversation around topics relevant to stimulating deeper engagement between professional GIS and OpenStreetMap communities. Presented by Bronwyn Agrios and Christine White, 11:00 am.

Space is limited to 24 participants.
