SharePoint 2010 Event Receivers: Real World Uses, Tips and Tricks

A session at SharePoint Saturday DC - June 2013

Saturday 8th June, 2013

2:15pm to 3:30pm (EST)

This session has grown out of my experiences as a SharePoint developer over the past 5 years. The presentation and code will give every developer a solid foundation for using Event Receivers in SharePoint 2010 built on best practices and real world usage.
The presentation starts with an overview of Event Receivers in SharePoint 2010 and focuses on List Item Event Receivers. While discussing List Item Event Receivers I give real world examples, tips, tricks, and talk about how event receivers have been utilized at different clients. I then discuss pros and cons of using Event Receivers as well as compare them to SharePoint Workflows.
I finish with a live demo of Event Receivers in real world scenarios. First I walk them through set up and feature activation. Then I show them how to update fields, validate data, check permissions, set alerts, send emails, mimic workflow, create folders and associate them with list items, and more. The presentation and code are freely available via my blog and website.
