  • Architecture of the Air

by Christopher Janney and Ryan Edwards

Trained as an architect and a jazz musician, Christopher Janney has been combining these two disciplines for over 30 years. Sometimes trying to make architecture more like music- more spontaneous, more "alive"- Janney has created a series of permanent interactive light/sound installations in both the US and Europe, titled "Urban Musical Instruments." At other times, trying to make music more like architecture- more physical, more visual- Janney has created a number of performances and performance instruments including "HeartBeat" for Mikhail Baryshnikov where he danced to the sound of his heart in "real time".

  • Localore Plays Austin: Speaker<>Street<>Screen

by Delaney Hall, Jessica Clark and Kara Oehler

KUT-FM's Austin Music Map (AMM) is a year-long exploration of the city's abundant and diverse musical subcultures. Blending on-line, broadcast, and street media, it's one of 10 public media innovation projects that AIR is producing for the national Localore initiative (see airmediaworks.org). Join AMM creator/producer Delaney Hall, Kara Oehler of Zeega, and Jessica Clark of AIR for an immersive digital tour of Austin's off-the-radar venues. The trio will then lead attendees through a workshop-style discussion of strategies for creating "full spectrum" interactive docs.

Experience the power of Austin's musical underbelly by bicycle, post-panel. Hall will lead a group of adventuresome bicyclists to musical outposts from the map on a tour designed explicitly for SXSWers. We'll meet/greet scene-makers at venues such as the White Horse and Esquina Tango. The tour is free, but space is limited. Sign up today at http://airmediaworks.org/BikeTour.

  • Scoring Tomb Raider: The Music Behind the Game

by Alex Wilmer and Jason Graves

Tomb Raider is being rebooted for a modern audience and, as such, requires a modern soundtrack.
This talk will focus on the score for Tomb Raider. Every aspect will be covered from the music's creative direction, composition, implementation and the technology behind it.
The goal for Tomb Raider was to truly score the game from beginning to end. This means that the music would need to fully support the emotional context of every moment in the game. More importantly, the score needed to reflect the character arc of Lara Croft across the game in its entirety. To achieve this goal, new techniques in music production, planning and implementation needed to be employed.
This talk will detail how an ambition became a reality, the lessons learned along the way and the natural progression of this kind of scoring for future game development.

  • Plug Me In! Neural Interfaces for Musicians

    by Alec Zopf

Since the dawn of music, technology has paved the way for musicians to exercise their creative impulses. From the humble pan pipes to the EWI, the harpsichord to the Kurzweil, the taiko to V-Drums - musicians have found ways to harness new developments in their service to the muse. As we enter a new era of biomedical advances, musicians should embrace the possibilities that direct nervous system access offers them.

This talk will cover the technologies available and how they can combine to form intuitive control systems for a new generation of musical instruments, and will conclude with a live demonstration of a prototype system!

  • Miku: The Open-Source Girl Who Conquered the World

by Hiroyuki Itoh, Kanae Muraki, Tara Knight and Alex Leavitt

Five years. A dozen social media platforms. Hundreds of producers and artists. Thousands of songs and videos. Millions of fans and billions of views. This is the ecosystem that gave rise to Hatsune Miku, the global singing idol that started as a voice synthesizing software in Japan and evolved into a peer-production phenomenon. This panel will critically examine Miku's open-source culture to see how social media, networked creativity, and massive collaboration produced one of the most complex music franchises in the world.

We will investigate Miku's networked social media community; how Crypton Future Media reacted to massive peer production; interviews with musical and media producers; bypassing copyright to architect a free media ecosystem while fostering support for artists; successes and challenges from collaborating with a handful of companies alongside thousands of individuals; and the plans behind producing numerous international sold-out concerts with a holographic singer.
