Future healthcare innovation success will be defined by the experience delivered to patients, caregivers, and physicians in hospitals, homes and at retail. New technologies such as mobile apps, wearable sensors, and social networks, are converging with new expectations and needs to create new business models for healthcare experiences. But imagine a far more extreme transformation, in which advances in information technology, biology and engineering allow us to move much of health care out of hospitals, clinics and doctors' offices, and into our everyday lives. Inspired by ideas and innovations emerging from university research labs, clinical innovation centers, start-ups and large companies, how can we use design and new technologies to bridge the gaps between the research and the delivery of innovative healthcare ideas – and how are start-ups and new business models both redefined and reinvigorated by this?

Frank Moss has had a 30-year career as a high tech and biotech entrepreneur. He served as Director of the MIT Media Lab from 2006-2011 and is currently Professor of the Practice there, where he heads the New Media Medicine group. He is also a co-founder of Bluefin Labs, the latest of his startups that include Stellar Computer, Bowstreet (acquired by IBM) and Infinity Pharmaceuticals (INFI). He is a senior strategic advisor to several startups, including DailyFeats, EyeNetra and ginger.io. Moss is author of “The Sorcerers and their Apprentices: How the Digital Magicians of the MIT Media Lab are Creating the Innovative Technologies That Will Transform our Lives” (June 7 2011). Moss served as CEO and chairman of Tivoli Systems Inc., a pioneer in distributed systems management, which he took public in 1995 and subsequently merged with IBM in 1996. Moss holds a BSE from Princeton University in Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences and a PhD from MIT in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He served on the board of trustees of Princeton from 2007-2011 and is currently a member Princeton's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences leadership advisory council; he also serves on the executive advisory councils of the Mayo Clinic Innovation Center and the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

As a lateral-thinking designer and strategist, Scott Stropkay is building answers to some of the most compelling questions of our day. Founding partner of the design consulting firm Essential, Scott helps businesses create physical products, digital products, and services in the consumer, healthcare, and commercial markets. He leads teams of researchers, designers, and engineers to build better discovery processes, define opportunities, and leverage design-thinking skills. Scott's work informs strategies and development for clients including AARP, iRobot, WellDoc, Healthways, P&G, and Philips Healthcare. He has worked in both corporate and consulting design capacities for over 25 years. He speaks at design and innovation conferences as well as academic institutions. Prior to Essential, Scott led an integrated design, human factors, and interaction design team at IDEO. He was also a Director of Design at Gillette and a Director of Design at Fitch. Scott holds a Bachelor's of Fine Art in Industrial Design from The Cleveland Institute of Art. He serves on the board of advisors of the Design Management Institute and writes for Innovation, the journal of the Industrial Designers Society of America.
