How many times have we heard “nobody got fired for choosing IBM” or more recently Microsoft. Well times are changing, and why would we always choose a product from one of the giants. Even if you want to choose a product from one of those, you should check an extra time if you state that you are not using Open Source. Basic parts of running a .NET website these days are running on Open Source coming from Microsoft. Why stop here? There are many good projects out in the wild and you will get an introduction to some of the pitfalls you should watch out for, because it can be a jungle unless you have a good guide on your team. What is the difference between free and open, what do all these licenses mean for you. This will not be a regal session but more a quick guide for those of you who are curious about using Open Source, but haven’t really taken the time to get deep into the systems. Besides looking at the legal papers you will get some hints to spot a good Open Source project so you don’t end up with something that is dead in the water two month after you pick it for your solution.
