WordPress is widely appreciated for its flexibility, for its wonderfully user-friendly admin interface and for the wealth of plugins and themes addressing nearly any imaginable use case.
However, WordPress' unique position within the Free/Open Source software environment is what allows developers to pick smart tools from different contexts and languages to build advanced solutions around WordPress with minimum effort and maximum coding delight.
In this presentation I will dissect a real-world project - assembling newsletters for web publishing and email distribution reusing content stored in plain WordPress pages and posts - showing how I integrated a handful of external tools (git-based workflows and deployment, Composer, HAML, SASS, Compass, Symfony, Twig, JSON) to make development of an important feature of a website fun, efficient and responsive to new feature requests, as well as making it possible to keep content fresh and consistent.
