Addicted to Meaning: Mental Models for Technical Communicators

A session at MadWorld 2014 Worldwide Learning Conference

Tuesday 15th April, 2014

1:30pm to 2:25pm (PST)

In this presentation, Kai explores how "meaning" works in technical communications, why it fails and how you can create meaningful documentation. Drawing on semiotics and the psychology of mental models, Kai shows how meaning and minimalism work, why FAQ's don't, and how to instruct users without irritating them.

Technical communicators who need to create meaningful documentation learn:

How (technical) communication transmits meaning
What mental models are and how readers create meaning based on them
How to ensure meaningful documentation by applying principles of minimalism.
