  • Slot 9 : Embracing Open Source with Linux on System z

    by Sven Schutz

Slot 9 : Embracing Open Source with Linux on System z

IBM is embracing Open Source on many levels. It has become an important pillar to IBM. The presentation shows how and where IBM interacts with the Open Source community - or to put it better - where IBM is an integral part of those communities. The second part of the presentation will explain IBM's Open Source engagement with a very concrete example. It will show how Open Source has become a vital part of a server where it was least expected - System z.

    Speaker : Sven Schutz

Sven joined IBM in 1999 to study IT and finished with a Bachelor of Science in 2002, in turn joining IBM as a full time employee. He started working in an internal data center in the Boeblingen lab supervising the SAN and Ethernet network. That is when he first got in touch with the mainframe and got to know it well in terms of hardware and connectivity. In 2006 Sven changed to development where he held a couple of positions, including an assignment to the zfcp team - the team responsible for the SCSI kernel driver for Linux on System z. In 2009 he took over the responsibility of the Linux on System z Service team, focussing on world wide client support, client care and more and more pre-sales activities. Liking the pre-sales focus, Sven decided to take on a new challange in 2013 when joing the ATS ASEAN team to support the growth of the mainframe, especially new workload with Linux on System z and z/VM.
