Establishing Credibility, Continuity and Recognition of eXtension-Horses as “The” Land Grant University Equine Resource

A session at 2014 National eXtension Conference

Tuesday 25th March, 2014

10:45am to 11:05am

The eXtension-Horses CoP (aka HorseQuest) has been a recognized pioneer within the eXtension realm, but it has taken a long term and multimodal approach to gain the recognition by colleagues, peers, and clientele on the national stage. HorseQuest members have actively partnered with, recruited, and collaborated with peers and colleagues by utilizing strengths and interests rather than “one size fits all” CoP participation. As a result, broad and diverse audiences can engage with online site content through access to products including: 1. Courses for adults, youth, and industry professionals (e.g. HALTER Program: educating leaders who are in turn educating youth, Youth Equine Safety Curriculum: educating youth & teens interested in working in the horse industry, Equine Business Network: horse industry professionals, entrepreneurs, working horse people), 2. Instructional Videos (e.g. YouTube videos), 3. Webinars, 4. Learning Lessons (a variety of topics, for different knowledge levels), 5. Social Media (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), and 6. Smart device applications (“Apps”) for body condition scoring and hay calculations. All of these efforts have significantly increased the visibility of eXtension Horses as an outreach outlet for people.
