Unraveling the Mysteries of Localization Kits for Translation Projects

A session at Society for Technical Communication Summit 2014

Presenters will:

  • Explain the purpose for creating a localization kit
  • Provide real-world examples of the consequences of not providing good localization kits
  • Explain the difference between translation contracts, Statements of Work (SOW), and localization kits
  • Show examples of real-world localization kits from various companies, including a detailed list of contents
  • Present guidelines for creating the kit
  • Provide the types of questions to ask when preparing the kit
  • Provide a sample of a real-world translation projectproduct documentation and UI strings to be translated
  • Provide worksheets to analyze the project samples

Attendees will:

  • Work with a partner to analyze a sample real-world translation project of software product documentation and/or UI strings
  • Use the worksheets to create a draft localization guide for the LSP, which includes a list of items in the localization kit
