Not your traditional research summative - Inquiry-Based Learning in Action

A session at Teaching and Learning in a Digital World 2014

Wednesday 20th August, 2014

1:15pm to 2:00pm (EST)

In the past, I use to have a somewhat generic (and frankly not so interesting) major research summative for my senior Social Science students. Students would pick a topic from a list given by me; would conduct research; and then construct an argumentative research essay. Currently, I utilize an inquiry-based approach to this task – sparking their curiosity and still having intellectual rigour in this summative. The use of technology is embedded throughout the process – from twitter being used to generate student interest and the topic list; to polleverywhere.com being used to co-construct assessment, and then revisited to make any changes to the criteria; to students having choice in their persuasive output (student examples of the final product will be available on display: essay, letter, collage, infographic, prezi, powtoon, powerpoint, thinglink, video) – students get to learn to be digital citizens and learn the educational uses of forums they are socially connected to.

In my poster session I will show participants the entire process and then show them the fantastic products the students created – digitally and on paper.
