Engaging all Learners: Integrating versatile apps into inquiry-based learning

A session at Teaching and Learning in a Digital World 2014

Wednesday 20th August, 2014

1:15pm to 2:00pm (EST)

We will share our collaborative experience with integrating technology, as well as insights we have gathered from our unique positions (Neetu Pinkerton – Grade 1/2 teacher, Surya Naidu – Grade 1-5 Technology Teacher). We will provide examples of how we have used highly adaptable apps (Pic Collage, iMovie, Doceri, Voicethread, Popplet, Word Clouds, Book Creator, Cinnamon’s Synonyms), Office365 and Google Docs to facilitate inquiry-based learning and the creation of multi-layered media texts. We will cite cases in which our spontaneous and flexible use of digital technology has fostered genuine student engagement and investment in the learning process amongst our most reluctant, unmotivated learners. We will also discuss our model of “quick” collaboration given the fast pace of our school day, our crowded schedules and limited time for co-planning. We will share our vision for Larkspur next year – including the creation of a Media Café, school-wide implementation of AppleTV, and PD opportunities we plan on offering our staff.
