I have often used traditional literature circles in my secondary English classroom, but three years ago I moved to online literature circles using Angel and now D2L. I was inspired by my daughter (a selective mute) to try and aid students in a similar situation. I began with a younger group, but it had the most impact when I tried it with my senior students. It allowed for more meaningful focused discussion. I noticed students bonding with students they didn't normally associate with. They were more likely to choose a novel that they were interested in and not just follow peers. It provided me with the opportunity to discuss how we communicate online.
