Who the Scrum Master is? Is he a powerless leader, facilitator, coach or a process guru? I also heard such definitions as mentor or a helper. All of these are perfectly valid, but at the same time I always have to deal with the fact that these terms do not give a clear understanding about the actions in this role. The question “What can I do being a leader without a title to get a result from the team?” is very common.
Scrum Master does not have a carrot or a stick, no role blueprint that allows him to give orders. He has only… influence, his own influence as a person. That makes situation clearer a bit, because there are definite influence technologies and we can form a set of techniques that work for us and use them to create or modify the team and its results.
In this talk I will identify the influential actions of the leader, give examples what rationale is behind the facilitation techniques and exercises that we use in everyday work.
Laugh, fear, partnership, following, success well, result definition and authorization and the way how we introduce new information – these are the parts that comprise our influence on the other people. Scrum Master should be pretty fluent at this to be successful at his role.
This is never a manipulation, this is influence and the better you are in that - the more successful is your team and you as a leader.
