1:00pm to 2:50pm
Regardless of the fact that educators are almost always at the mercy of the physical space and size, (location, windows, electricity and lighting), this session will describe how we transformed a regular classroom into a “Makerspace” that resembles a combination of Kindergarten and Starbucks. I will share simple strategies to enhance the inquiry driven classroom by developing a student centric ‘Maker Community’ with a strong focus on STEM principles, Problem Based Learning, Design Thinking and Arts Education, each with an overriding theme of Social Justice and Environment. While we will share both our success and failures of integrating 3D printing, Minecraft, iPads, 1:1 computers and use of coding (arduino, robotics) in creating, I will emphasize aspects of the Maker Culture that are non-tech centric, (arts, composing, indoor garden, knitting, building, etc) and that are ageless.
