Virtual Browsing at NCSU Libraries and Beyond

A session at LITA Forum

Friday 13th November, 2015

3:30pm to 4:15pm (CST)

With a growing number of library resources being purchased in electronic formats or housed in off-site shelving systems, enabling users to browse the library’s collections in a virtual environment is becoming increasingly important. I will share an environmental scan of efforts in this area, as well as our experiences implementing virtual shelf browsing in the library catalog and on a touchscreen kiosk at North Carolina State University. I will discuss our motivation and implementation, including our approach to challenges such as the lack of call numbers for electronic materials. I’ll also share some alternative approaches to serendipitous browsing we’ve been experimenting with.
