Dr. Shibblelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Implement Single Sign On

A session at LITA Forum

Saturday 14th November, 2015

10:30am to 11:15am (CST)

Libraries have long settled on EZproxy and IP recognition for authentication and access to eResources. Now that HathiTrust requires partner libraries to use Shibboleth, many US libraries are struggling to implement Shibboleth and to understand its role for library access. Shibboleth comes with a slew of jargon, a steep learning curve, administrative and intra-organization collaboration challenges. Implemented well, Shibboleth streamline and personalizes access to the library and other campus services. The presenters overview how Shibboleth works, its interactions with EZproxy, related standards and terminology, practical steps for libraries implementing Shibboleth, and tips for leveraging Shibboleth to improve UX. The presenters will allow plenty of time for questions. If requested, we can do a live demo of Shibboleth authentication and authorization, show the cookies, and get more technical. We will provide sites and links participants can adapt to their home sites to check U.S. vendors WAYF pages and local shibboleth implementations.
